MenACWY Vaccine for 18-19 year olds
Posted or Updated on 25 Apr 2016
The Government have now agreed that 18/19 year olds will be offered a combined vaccine that protects against A.C.W.and Y strains of meningococcal disease. The vaccine is particularly important for those who are heading off to University as they are at greater risk.
Why do i need the vaccination? Cases of Meningitis and septicaema (blood poisoning) casued by MenW bacteria are rising, due to a particuarly deadly strain. Older tennagers and university students are at high risk of infection because they tend to live in close contact in shared accommidation such as University Halls of Residence. The MenACWY vaccine provides a good protection aganist serious infections caused by four different meningococcal groups (A.C.W and Y) including Meningitis and septicaemia. The vaccine is given by a single injection into the upper arm.
If you would like this vaccine please phone the surgery and make an appointment with our Practice Nurse.
